Relatively Sane By Whitney Dineen
This is the second book in the relatively series by Whitney Dineen. I read it right behind the first book with little lag time between the two. If you do as I did, be prepared for a lot of re-cap.
I give this book 3.5 stars rounding to a 4. Our main girl Cat is back in this romcom about the Masterson clan. She is home and looking to start a new life for herself in familiar territory. She has rekindled (kinda, you will see) her relationship with Sam and is excited about being home and with her family. Now she just needs to figure out how she's going to go from a party planner in the big apple to a career in her small hometown.
I was intending on giving this book a 3, but the ending was really good. I felt like the entire first half of the book could have been a couple chapters because it practically went over the majority of what happened in the first book. This allows for people to hop right in to the second book without having to read Relatively Normal first, so I understand Dineen's thought process behind this. I'm just prefer a series that does more building with each book, not recapping. The recapping really wouldn’t have bothered me if I didn’t feel like Cat just kept repeating her reasons for moving home and not quite trusting Sam throughout the entire first half. Honestly, it’s been 14 years give the man a break!
Probably my most favorite thing about this book was Nan! We see so much more of her spunky personality in this installment, and I’m sure we all wish we had our very own Nan now. I loved seeing Cat embrace her family even more by accepting them for who they are. I really enjoyed the new characters, except for one in particular (once again avoiding spoilers, you’re welcome).
Much like the first book, this book was really more comedy than romantic comedy in my opinion. I really would have like to see more romance between Cat and Sam. It just felt very superficial to me. I’m not one that necessarily wants details like those in Nan’s Scottish romances, but I would have liked a little more than was provided.
The second half of the book was 100x better than the first, so if you are like me and getting bogged down at the beginning I promise the end is so worth it. Dineen really has a great writing style; everything flows well. This book was less “choppy” than the last, and the chapter breaks fit really well! I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a fun read that is sure to put a smile on your face!
